Assimilation with Discord is Reportedly in the Works for the PS5

A recent source indicates that PlayStation systems will be getting Discord support in a big update unexpectedly soon.

Discord’s text and voice messaging features have made it the de facto standard for PC chat amongst gamers. As a result of its increasing importance, even game consoles have started including Discord for an inter-system chat. Like cross-play in general, PlayStation systems have been reluctant to adopt this feature. Discord’s release on PS4 and PS5 has been delayed, but that may soon change.

Several sources have told Exporter that the PlayStation version of Discord will be released shortly. The release is expected in the “coming months,” though no exact date has been given. This implies that by the end of 2022, if not sooner, gamers on PS5 and PS4 will be able to communicate with one another via voice while also communicating with players on PC and even Xbox.

Since Discord’s development for PlayStation consoles is still under testing, a more precise release date does not appear to be available at this time. Even while progress is being made “quite well,” the project is far from complete. The delivery method for the Discord upgrade is another concern. Even though it’s listed as part of the PlayStation 5 Version 7.00 upgrade, Discord’s release date may shift if other features scheduled for the PS5 patch take longer than expected to complete.

The latest version of the PS5’s firmware, 5.50, came out in late July. According to the rumour mill, version 6.00 will drop around the middle of September, which would put the 7.00 update with Discord around the end of October or the beginning of November. Considering the importance of the holiday season to the sales of video games, it makes sense, too. If you’re looking forward to the release of games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in late October or Call of Duty: Warzone 2 shortly after, you might appreciate the fact that Discord is playable across several platforms.

It’s disappointing that PS4 owners can’t use Discord quite yet, but Xbox One owners have to wait a little longer. As a prelude to the general rollout, Xbox has only made Discord available to Xbox Insiders to test. Due to this, it’s probable that the PlayStation 4 version of Discord will be made available at the same time as the Xbox One version, or at least somewhat close to it.

Users of the PS4 and PS5 may be ready for the full release of Discord by linking their accounts ahead of time. Users may access the PlayStation Network in Discord by logging in and going to User Settings > Connections > PlayStation Network. A user’s current PlayStation game will be shown in their PC Discord client. It is assumed that this will also be a must for using Discord on PlayStation whenever it is released later this year.
