NPD Group’s newest monthly sales report, detailing the best-selling video games and platforms in June 2022, has been revealed, and Elden Ring once again stands out.

Elden Ring was the best-selling video game in June of 2022, and it is still the best-selling game of 2022 overall. NPD also reports that Elden Ring, although only being available for purchase for the last five months, is already in the top 10 best-selling premium games in the United States in terms of dollar sales. Once again, this is not based on unit sales but rather on monetary amounts. Due to the fact that the research firm did not reveal their whole top 10 list, we do not know where Elden Ring falls.

The Year’s Finest Games Are Now Playing (So Far)

Since its release in February, Elden Ring has consistently been the best-selling game in the United States in terms of dollar sales, with the exception of April, when Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was the most popular game.

From Software’s Elden Ring is predicted to outsell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and become the best-selling video game in the United States in 2022. That’s a lot, but it’s hard to compare Elden Ring, which was out in February, to Modern Warfare 2, which won’t be out until the end of October.

Overwatch, however, has returned to the software rankings for the first time since October 2019 (coming in at number five overall). NPD claims that the June 28 launch of the Overwatch 2 beta was a major factor in the game’s subsequent rise in sales.

After debuting at position 159 in May 2022, Final Fantasy VII: Remake saw a meteoric rise to ninth place by June of that year. NPD found that sales were boosted by commemorative events marking the game’s silver anniversary.

In terms of hardware, June 2022 saw the Switch as the best-selling console in terms of unit sales, while the PS5 generated the greatest expenditure in terms of dollars. NPD reports that dollar sales of the PS5 increased by double digits in June 2022 compared to June 2021, suggesting that the console is gaining momentum. However, June 2022 console expenditure was down 8% annually to $371 million.

For mobile games specifically, revenue dropped 10.7 percent from the previous year, with worse performance on Google Play being the primary culprit. In contrast, App Store spending rose year over year, but by 0.16 percent. Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Pokemon Go, Coin Master, Evony: The King’s Return, Royal Match, Diablo Immortal, Bingo Blitz, State of Survival: Zombie War, and Clash of Clans all ranked among the top-grossing mobile games in June 2022.

In June 2022, the best-selling peripheral was the midnight black PS5 DualSense controller. As of June 2022, total spending on accessories was $176 million, down 15% from the previous year.

In June of 2022, Americans spent $4.3 billion on video games and related hardware, down 11% from the previous year. Although subscription expenditure increased year over year, it wasn’t enough to counteract reductions in all other areas. Spending was down 10% to $26.3 billion in the first half of 2022, with subscription content being the only area to show increase.
