For the longest time, gamers needed a PlayStation console to play first-party PlayStation games. With the release of more PlayStation exclusives on PC, the number of devices that can run games from the blue brand continues to grow, it appears that this concept is being phased away. The most recent PlayStation exclusive to come to PC was Marvel’s Spider-Man, and soon The Last of Us: Part 1 will join it.

It would appear, however, that Sony has no intention of stopping with the porting of its back catalogue to PC. As a new PlayStation mobile controller was patented last year, fans began to wonder if Sony was planning to enter the mobile gaming industry. Now, Sony has revealed PlayStation Studios Mobile, an entire studio dedicated to developing games for mobile devices. Savage Game Studios, a German studio, was also bought by Sony for this new department.

Savage Game Studios was established in 2020, making it a young studio. However, PlayStation appears to have great expectations for the developer, since a new AAA action game is under development at the studio. Savage Game Studios was created by industry veterans who previously worked at Rovio, Zynga, and Insomniac, so the company isn’t completely without expertise in the field. The name of the studio gives away the fact that it specialises in making action games with strong stories.

While PlayStation has been tight-lipped about its forthcoming AAA action project, the studio’s CEO Hermen Hulst has said that the game would have live-service components. Noting that he is “excited for what [Savage Game Studios] will be able to produce,” Hulst did not give any hints about a possible release date. Hulst reassured fans who are worried that Sony is abandoning console development in favour of mobile games. Hulst stated, “Our initiatives beyond console in no way reduce our commitment to the PlayStation community,” and then he reaffirmed PlayStation’s dedication to creating additional single-player experiences.

PlayStation appears to have several promising single-player games scheduled for 2022 and 2023, such as God of War: Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Even if Naughty Dog doesn’t make another The Last of Us, Sony has a plethora of other single-player properties it can count on, such as the Horizon games. In that case, it appears that PlayStation’s expansion into mobile games won’t slow down the company’s console release schedule. PlayStation Studios Mobile may release some exciting new games in the future, and there have been rumours of a Destiny spin-off coming to mobile devices.
